DSD - Software for Simulating DrillString Statics and Dynamics
The increase in the number of drilled ultra-extended reach wells and complex geometries requires contact points and wellbore friction to be calculated with greater accuracy. DSD is an application for drillstring statics and dynamics that simulates the interaction of the drillstring with the borehole under a variety of steady-state (static) and transient dynamic conditions.
Advantages:
Currently there are two modules, the Torque and Drag module and the Dynamics module.
Torque and Drag module - tripping in and tripping out analysis of the drag forces and drag torques. Pick up weight, slack off weight, torque, while drilling, on/off bottom, with/without rotation. Contact forces: magnitude and direction.
Dynamics module - outputs the free vibration (natural) frequencies and mode shapes, critical frequencies and the lateral map for eccentric rotation and performs a fully nonlinear transient analysis of the dynamics of a drillstring rotating in the borehole. Weight on bit, torque at the top drive or RPM and properties of the friction interactions along the surface of the borehole or at the bit can be specified.
Only commercial software which can model the full dynamics of the drillstring and wellbore to reproduce damaging effects such as stick-slip and whirl.
DSD uses a stiff string model – the most accurate drill string model.
Can be used to simulate and design a PID (Proportional, Integral, Derivative) controller for torque and RPM at the rotary table.
Produces a variety of outputs such as; frequency and mode plots, internal forces, contact forces, deflection curves, WOB and TOB plots, vibration risk index, accelerometer readings, rate of penetration (ROP) and more.
Fully decoupled computing engine and Graphical User Interface, which allows DSD to be easily incorporated into existing software.
Executable, which can be run from the DOS command prompt, takes as argument a text file consisting of input data and commands.
Input consists of easily readable text files, which can be edited with a text editor.
